The violence that Dalits and others from marginalized groups face every day is obvious. The urban culture is oblivious to the hardship of these people, who, as depicted in the Karnan, must battle for their rights to live, learn, work, and earn higher salaries.

There have been several cases in the Indian social milieu when they have been the victims of government and police brutality. Karnan, directed by Mari Selvaraj and starring Dhanush in one of his most dramatic portrayals, is a daring, compelling picture of a faulty society that fails its people, caste-based rioting, and police brutality.

Review of the Movie Karnan

Karnan portrays an exceptionally hard-hitting narrative of a hamlet battling for recognition, loosely based on the 1995 caste clashes in Kodiyankulam. It’s about the inhabitants of Podiyankulam, who have been oppressed by the rest of the world. Nobody pays attention to the residents of Podiyankulam, from the upper castes of the neighboring hamlet to the local collector and the police department.

The movie begins with a disturbing image of a young girl dying in the middle of a road, while numerous automobiles pass by without stopping to aid. Following the event, the residents of the hamlet met with many officials to propose the installation of a bus stop, but to no effect. An incident involving a local bus escalates into a riot, compelling the police department to interfere, and setting the stage for shocking events.

Total CollectionRs. 61.8 crore
ProfitRs. 15 crore

Karnan poses a number of relevant and equally essential points concerning the situation of the oppressed in our society. The film provides us a front-row seat to the events that led to the notorious Kodiyankulam riots, which were reportedly engineered by the police, thanks to Theni Eswar’s soul-stirring graphics.

The video highlights police violence and misuse of power while also portraying a heartbreaking narrative of Dalits being denied even their most basic needs. So many metaphors are employed to brilliantly empower the picture, particularly one involving a donkey, and the way they’re employed to express the desired message is admirable.

While Mari Selvaraj deserves all the credit for his vision, it is Theni Eswar’s soul-stirring graphics that bring these visions to life. Karnan is about unrest, whereas Mari Selvaraj’s debut film Pariyerum Perumal was about education. To discuss caste politics and police excesses, the filmmaker expresses his own rage.

Cast of the Karnan Movie

Dhanush’s performance as Karnan is one of the film’s mainstays, and he’s a delight to watch as the village’s guide. Lal, a veteran Malayalam actor, plays Karnan’s tutor and has a strong presence. Rajisha Vijayan and Lakshmipriyaa Chandramouli, two significant female characters, both do an excellent job in their roles. Lakshmi, who plays Dhanush’s older brother, gives one of the greatest supporting performances in the film. A fascinating sub-plot is the continuous remark on gods and their apathy. The music of Santhosh Narayanan is crucial in enhancing the film’s ambiance.
